Heat index in Iowa rises above 100 on Monday, threat of severe weather returns tonight

The heat will last at least a week. The National Weather Service office in Des Moines is warning Iowans of heat through Friday, with high temperatures in the 80s to mid-90s in most places across the state.

Heat index values ​​are expected to reach 111 degrees in western Iowa, while central Iowa will be below 100 degrees on Monday. Eastern Iowa’s heat index ranges from the high 80s to the low 90s. NWS meteorologists remind Iowans to stay hydrated, limit heat exposure and stay cool.

NWS predicts scattered severe storms Monday evening after 7 p.m. The main threat is damaging winds up to 120 km per hour. The highest confidence in storms and the area of ​​most concern is in northeastern Iowa, the NWS said.

The storms will continue overnight. More storms are possible Tuesday afternoon and evening, although confidence in the forecast is lower, NWS said. The main severe weather threats for Tuesday include damaging winds and large hail. Tornadoes and heavy rain are possible.
