Goose slides through sold-out Southeast Run (photos/videos)

Goose released its ongoing 2024 summer tour – the first extended outing with the band’s new lineup Cotter Ellis on drums – headed to the Southeast last week for a series of sold-out shows in North Carolina and Georgia.

At the kickoff of the Southeast run on Tuesday, Goose took the stage Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, NC, ready to get started. Fresh off a great show in Cleveland and a headliner at Northlands 2024the band kept up its momentum with a smooth, heavy first set featuring a cover of Radio head‘s “Weird Fishes,” played for the first time in 81 shows. Set two was highlighted by a big jam on “Pancakes” and a sing-along rendition of Steppenwolf‘Magic Carpet Ride’. Fan favorite “Hot Tea” closed out the set with another beverage-themed selection, “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmesin the encore.

From there, Goose headed to Atlanta for three consecutive nights of shopping Fox Theater. Taking the stage on Thursday with ‘Butterflies’, a song written by a multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspachthe band settled into its first performance at the historic venue with a memorable “All I Need” jam and a few Kenny Loggins songs, “I’m Alright” and “Make The Move,” before fans are treated to the full “Jive Suite,” or a “jivefecta,” my combination of “Jive I > Jive II > Jive Lee” to finish set one to close.

A dancey “So Ready” opened set two, which also included a jammed cover Grateful dead classic “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo”. An energetic “The Empress of Organos” closed the set, and a 420-friendly “Doobie Song” encore closed the first of three nights on a high remark.

Another sold out show started on Friday Echo and the Bunnymen“The Killing Moon,” from the soundtrack of the beloved 2001 sci-fi thriller Donnie Darko. In addition to solid versions of “Elizabeth,” “Drive” and “Bob Don,” another highlight of the set was a cover of The collision‘Rock The Casbah’, with percussionist Jeff Arevalo on lead vocals.

Night two, set two, kicked off with “Hungersite” and the recently debuted “Give it Time,” followed by an incendiary “Thatch” and an upbeat “Feel it Now.” Sing-along ballad “726” offered some respite before the 2022 title track Drip field and a powerful encore “Turbulence & The Night Rays”.

To close out Saturday’s Fox Theater run, Goose dropped by with jazzy jam vehicle “Hot Love & The Lazy Poet” before leaving The Houtbroeders‘ “Atlas” for the first time in 92 shows. Set one also included “Mr. Action”, a song dedicated to the band’s crew, and the afrobeat-inspired “Arrow”.

The band finished strong with an improv-heavy second set that stitched together just three songs: the optimistic “Tumble” and emotional “A Western Sun,” and a soaring “Red Bird” that weaved through different sections and time signatures. After receiving an enthusiastic ovation at the end of the show, Goose returned to the stage for an encore, closing the run in Atlanta with The band‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down’ and ‘Factory Fiction’.

The band ended their stay in Southeast on Sunday in Charlotte, NC Skyla Credit Union Amphitheater, and once again the show was completely sold out. Both sets featured covers that put a smile on the audience’s faces Pat Benatar‘Love Is A Battlefield’ in the first set and Johnny Rivers‘ ‘Secret Agent Man’ in the second – the latter appearing in a Goose setlist for the first time since 2020. A ‘Pancakes’ tease from Peter during a fast-paced version of ‘Echo of a Rose’ brought things full circle in the massive “ Pancakes ” jam that started the Southeast run, and “ Arcadia ,” with “Nebula” teases from Rick, brought the run to a satisfying close.
