An injured hiker was carried off a mountain after weather conditions prevented helicopter assistance, Oregon officials said.

Rescuers from the Cannon Beach Rural Fire Protection District attempted to request a helicopter to assist in the rescue mission on Saturday, June 22, but a marine layer covered the Saddle Mountain Trail, rescue teams said in a Facebook post.

Instead, crews hiked a little more than two miles up the mountain, found the hiker and carried him back in a basket, officials said.

After five hours of hiking, crews took the injured person to a parking lot before transporting them to a local hospital, officials said.

Rescue crew members did not identify the hiker or indicate how he was injured.

McClatchy News reached out on June 24 for more information and was awaiting a response.

Marine layers are an atmospheric phenomenon that can cause fog or clouds on the surface, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Cannon Beach is located about 80 miles northwest of Portland.
