Reconstruction work begins on I-96 in Ionia County

PORTLAND – Another highway project could cause years of delays for motorists commuting to and from Grand Rapids on Interstate 96.

Monday was the start date for the $105 million rebuild of an eight-mile stretch between Sunfield and Bliss Road, although the job actually began last week with demolition work on the Jordan Lake Road bridge over I-96, the department said of Transport.

This year’s work will include temporary widening and installation of crossover lanes in preparation for actual reconstruction work in 2025 and 2026, said MDOT spokesman John Richard. Until at least mid-July, lane closures will be lifted on Friday mornings to allow motorists to cruise freely over the weekend, he said.

All traffic will be moved to the eastbound lanes next year so the westbound lanes can be rebuilt, MDOT said. By 2026, the new westbound lanes will be able to carry all traffic, while the eastbound lanes are being rebuilt.

The multi-year project will be the first full rebuild of that stretch of highway since it was constructed more than 60 years ago, although it was repaved with recycled concrete in 1986, Richard said.

Drivers can expect lane closures, traffic shifts and ramp closures throughout the life of the project, MDOT said.

The Jordan Lake Road bridge is closed on the freeway, although the freeway exit and on-ramp remain open, MDOT said.
