MaKiyah Matthews signs for Augusta University

MaKiyah Matthews, a recent graduate of Richmond Hill High School, has officially put pen to paper and signed with Division-II Augusta University for basketball.

“It was an easy decision,” Matthews said. “It is a good learning experience. They have great facilities. The weight room is nice and they have four different schools. It’s a great place to be.”

Matthews, a point guard on the team, was voted team captain for her senior season and led her team to a 17-12 overall record.

Matthews was a crucial part of the Lady Wildcats basketball team this past season, leading them to a playoff run.

“Despite setbacks, my daughter has shown unwavering resilience and determination and has achieved great success,” said Matthews’ mother Heather Matthews. “Her ability to persevere and wait for the right opportunity has paid off! I have no doubt that she will continue to excel and make a positive impact in everything she pursues. Now watch what happens next!”

Matthews saw time on the varsity all four years of high school and was able to surpass the 1,000-point mark in her last few games to finish with 1,016 points in her career.

“We’re really excited for her,” head basketball coach Sarah Jones said. “She has talked about this day from day one. She had a number of other colleges interested, but I think Augusta would be a good fit for her.

“It’s always good to have a kid play on varsity all four years. Her teammates respected that about her. She helped set up the program. Now it’s everyone else’s turn to fill that role.”

Matthews is the tenth signee for Coach Jones, who took over the program 11 years ago. This is her first head coaching job, so all ten signees were from RHHS.
