10 reasons why attending the Masters is different from any other event

I’ve been to the Masters before, but it had been a while before last week. But thanks to a friend with tickets, I was able to surprise my son with a trip to the best golf tournament.

I’ve been to a lot of PGA Tour events during my career, but the Masters is just different. There really is nothing else like it.

Here are 10 reasons why I love it.

1. Small town charm

Augusta isn’t the easiest place to get to, but that doesn’t take away from the fun. As you drive to the course, you will see many stalls on the secondary market selling tickets and fans walking towards the tournament. (Not to mention the collection of Waffle House locations scattered throughout the city.) The Masters is a global event and the city of Augusta does a great job of welcoming all visitors. During Masters week, there is nothing more important in northeast Georgia than the golf tournament.

2. Easy parking

Parking for most major events is difficult, but not at the Masters. You can park right on Berckman’s Rd (free) and walk to the gate. It’s so simple and efficient, and other events should take note! We met numerous other customers walking through the gates, and it was very interesting to hear their background stories.

3. Efficient lines

As you line up to get in, there’s a certain buzz in the air. Everyone is so excited. But although everyone wants to get in, there is no chaos when entering. Everyone waits patiently and politely. When you finally get to the front of the line, the workers say, “Welcome to the Masters.” You can’t help but smile.

4. Friendly staff

Speaking of the staff, everyone is so friendly! Whether it’s just southern hospitality or Masters charm I’m not sure, but every time we had a question it was easy to find an answer. One volunteer told us they had been working on the event for 25 years and were rewarded with two-week passes to share with friends. Not a bad trade-off!

5. Historic back nine

The entire course is special, but I recommend walking the back nine first. It’s so special to see all the historic sites where some of the most famous waves took place. Once you reach Amen Corner it will take your breath away.

6. Impeccable conditions

It goes without saying, but the conditions at Augusta National are unlike anywhere else. Not a blade of grass is out of place. The bunkers are white as snow. And the greens are smooth as glass. We went the day after a huge storm and the course was still in perfect condition. It’s amazing how well they maintain the grounds.

7. Excellent concessions

The Masters is known for its affordable concessions, and they live up to the hype. The pimento cheese sandwich is a fan favorite, and it’s hard to go wrong with an Azalea cocktail. The prices may be cheap, but the fare is still high quality.

8. Honor system seats

At Augusta National, customers can purchase their own Masters seats to use on the course. It is tradition for fans to set up and leave their chairs as they walk the course, knowing they will still be there when they return. I always knew about this tradition, but it was cool to see it with my own eyes. If you place your seat in a prime viewing location, you have reserved a spot for the entire day. Pretty cool!

9. Great golf

With so much fuss surrounding the event, it can be easy to forget that there’s a real tournament going on, but it’s a real treat to see the best players in the world competing on such a great course. And when Tiger is there, it just takes things to a new level.

10. No phones

There are no phones allowed at the Masters, and while that may seem inconvenient, it’s actually quite nice. Spending time with your family and friends in such a special place, without the distraction of technology, is quite nice. I can’t wait for my next opportunity to go back.
