Police have been given extensive powers to stop and search people following an outbreak of violence in Cheltenham.

Gloucestershire Police suspect there is an ongoing feud between two groups in the city.

On Sunday, officers were authorized under Article 60 of the Criminal Law and Public Order Act to carry out searches to prevent further violence.

The order, which covers the areas of St Paul’s, The Moors, Hester’s Way, St Marks and Pittville in Cheltenham, has since been extended until Tuesday afternoon.

Police said several incidents have taken place over the past week, mainly in the St Paul’s and Hester’s Way areas.

‘Unacceptable violence’

This includes criminal damage, reports of people seen with knives, fights taking place and threats of violence against people and property.

Police say there have been no reported injuries at this time.

In several incidents, those involved used electric bicycles and scooters, some of whom wore face coverings.

“This violent crime is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“We have already made several arrests while the investigation is ongoing, and we will take strong action against those involved.

“We would encourage anyone with footage of the incidents, including the vehicles used, to contact us.”
