New name for Maryland’s Londontowne Symphony Orchestra: Naptown Philharmonic Orchestra

In Friday’s (June 21) Eye on Annapolis (Maryland), an unsigned article reports: “The Londontowne Symphony Orchestra has officially been renamed the Naptown Philharmonic Orchestra, marking a new direction in delivering affordable classical and popular music in the Annapolis area. This name change honors Annapolis’ nickname and signals a renewed focus on the community. During the season finale on May 18, music director and conductor Dr. Anna Binneweg described the event as ‘a-MA-zing’, which underlined the enthusiasm of the audience… Chairman of the Board Cmdr. Diane Nichols stated… “Our mission to provide high-quality, family-friendly, affordable concerts remains unchanged and will only grow stronger.” The new name was unveiled during a performance of iconic American music… The unveiling concluded with the Naptown Brass Band, a New Orleans-style second-line band… sparking a lively party. Dr. Binneweg expressed her excitement about the rebranding, noting the orchestra’s commitment to promoting professional, student and community musicians: “Our new name and appearance better connect us to this area, and we strive to be more visible in the community.’ Violinist Laura Colgate performed an impressive rendition of Florence Price’s Violin Concerto No. 2… Planning for the 2024-2025 season is well underway, with the opener on September 21, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.”
