CT emergency responder accused of assault

A New Haven emergency responder is facing assault charges after an incident at a city shopping plaza that was caught on video.

Justin Augustine — supervisor of fire and police services through the Public Services Answering Point in New Haven — turned himself in to police on a warrant after the video circulated on social media platforms, New Haven police said.

Augustine was charged with third-degree assault, second-degree menacing and second-degree breach of peace in connection with an incident that occurred June 13, police said.

Just after midnight on June 14, officers responded to a New Haven home after reports of an argument and then an assault, police said.

Officers obtained and reviewed video of the incident, which allegedly showed a man punching another man who was sitting on the ground outside a store in the plaza on Whalley Avenue, police said.

Video of the incident was widely circulated on social media and police say officers identified Augustine as the alleged attacker.

An arrest warrant was issued for Augustine, who turned himself in on Friday.

He was released on $2,500 bail, police said.
