Former nationalist’s wife dies at 91

Mrs. Augusta Olujoke Davies (nee Oluwole), widow of a prominent Nigerian founding father and nationalist, the late Chief Hezekiah Oladipo Davies QC, has passed away at the age of 91. A friend of her children, Folu Olapade, in a tribute to the late Davies matriarch on Tuesday, described her as an epitome of kindness and dedication, and a strong advocate for the less privileged and humanity in general.

The tribute was titled: Farewell to Chief HO Davies Matriarch – Augusta Olujoke Davies. It read in part: “The family of the late Chief HO Davies has lost their loving Matriarch, Madam Augusta Olujoke Davies (nee Oluwole). The beloved ninety-year-old returned to be with the Lord on May 11, 2024, at the age of 91 years.

“Mrs. Augusta Olujoke Davies was the widow of Chief Hezekiah Oladipo Davies QC, a prominent Nigerian founding father and nationalist, and mother of Mrs. Olufunmilayo Goka, the former Deputy Managing Director of Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), and other illustrious and successful children .

“It has been a celebration of life since her passing, as she is fondly remembered by many as an epitome of kindness and dedication, “a strong advocate for the less privileged and humanity in general” and “the proverbial mother hen who went the extra mile to ensure the advancement, well-being and protection of not only her biological children, but everyone around her.” He stated that her legacy for many others lies not only in the love she gave or the challenges she overcame, but in the community she fostered around her.
