King’s draft pick Devin Carter is uncertain to play in the NBA Summer League. This is why

The newest member of the Sacramento Kings may not be able to play in the Summer League.

Devin Carter, the Providence Kings guard selected No. 13 on Wednesday, is dealing with an unspecified shoulder injury, leaving his status uncertain for the California Classic or when the NBA Summer League moves to Las Vegas in mid-July.

“We know he is dealing with a shoulder injury,” Kings general manager Monte McNair said Wednesday night. “I think we should get him over here and talk to our doctors and see what it is. But as we go through the draft process, our documents are confident. We have been in contact with his team. We are confident it is not a long-term problem.”

McNair did not indicate whether Carter’s injury affected the team’s opinion of his draft stock, nor did he say whether the Kings red-flagged the injury.

The Kings host the California Classic on July 2, 3 and 5, with their summer team expected to play Team China, the San Antonio Spurs and Charlotte Hornets. The Summer League moves to Las Vegas from July 12 to July 22.

Carter, 22, played in 33 games in each of the past two seasons for the Friars. From his junior to senior season, he improved his scoring from 13 points per game to 19.7 and his rebounding from 4.9 to 8.7.

He is the son of 13-year NBA veteran Anthony Carter, who was an assistant coach on George Karl’s staff for the Kings in 2015-16 and also worked under Erik Spoelstra for the Miami Heat. He is currently on the staff of the Memphis Grizzlies under Taylor Jenkins.

Devin Carter said he had personal visits with eight teams on Wednesday leading up to the first round. He said he had “authentic” interactions with King’s power brokers during his visit and was not surprised he was ultimately taken by Sacramento.

“That’s the team I thought was going to pick me,” Carter said via video call. “I felt like I had a really (good) training with them, meetings and everything with the decision makers, everything was just perfect in my eyes and I think it all clicked.”
