Former Celtics guard unsure to play in Heat series vs. Boston

The Celtics will face a familiar foe in the first round, but a short-handed Heat team may be missing another key player besides Jimmy Butler for the matchup. Former Boston guard Terry Rozier has missed the last six games for Miami with a neck injury and is week to week, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Rozier is expected to play a major role in the series against Boston if he is available with Miami already extremely tight on the perimeter. Butler is out for the next few weeks with an MCP injury, while Josh Richardson is out for a year after shoulder surgery.

Rozier has played 31 games with the Heat this year after being acquired in a midseason trade with the Hornets in exchange for Kyle Lowry and a future first-round pick. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 16.4 points and 4.6 assists per game while shooting 37 percent from three-point range. However, he had taken his game to the next level in recent weeks before your injury, averaging 23.6 points per game and shooting 57 percent from three-point range in five games before suffering a neck injury against the Pacers on April 7.

With Miami on the perimeter, look for bigger roles for Tyler Herro and Jamie Jaquez Jr. on offense as the duo started Friday night’s play-in game with Caleb Martin. Jacques Jr. should be an upgrade defensively for Miami against Boston’s wings, but the Celtics starters will be able to select Herro if he starts playing big minutes.

Herro spoke about the challenge for Miami versus Boston being so short of the first round.

“They’re clearly the best team, statistically, in the league,” Herro told reporters in Miami on Friday evening. “They will be a huge challenge for us, but we are built for this and we are excited. We have to keep an eye on Jimmy (Butler), so we’re going into Boston with a great attitude and mentality, and we’re ready to get going.

The Celtics host Game 1 of the series at TD Garden on Sunday afternoon.
