A Sulfur man and his live-in girlfriend have been charged with second-degree cruelty after a four-year-old boy was found unconscious in their home.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kayla Vincent said officers were dispatched to a home on N. Claiborne Street on Wednesday around 1 p.m.

Vincent said that when detectives spoke with the child’s father, Scott A. Edwards, 26, and his live-in girlfriend, Jenna E. Morgan, 24, both of Sulfur, they gave conflicting accounts of how the injuries may have occurred; none matched the extent of the injuries the boy suffered.

Hospital officials said the boy suffered injuries consistent with likely ongoing abuse over time — including multiple brain bleeds and bruises, all in various stages of healing, Vincent said.

After further investigation, detectives issued a warrant signed by Judge Tony Fazzio for the arrest of Edwards and Morgan on Thursday. They were arrested outside the city at the hospital and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. They are both charged with second-degree cruelty to a minor.

Their bonds are set at $750,000 each.

The boy was transported to a local hospital and then airlifted to an out-of-town hospital due to the severity of his injuries. The child is in critical condition in intensive care. He has been placed in state custody by the Department of Children & Family Services.
