Dacey scores win in 1500, women perform strong at Trinity Invitation

HARTFORD, Kon. -Junior Cat Dacey took the 1,500-meter victory at the Trinity (Conn.) Invitation on Saturday, as the Garnet Chargers scored a pair of top-10 finishes in their penultimate meet of the regular season.

The Massachusetts native crossed the finish line in 4:46.86, just shy of her personal best set at last year’s Liberty League Track & Field Championships. She scored 10 points for Union and set the tone for Union early in the day.

However, the success didn’t stop for Union at the event. Junior Caroline Kelly rounded out the top five, improving her previous personal best by exactly nine seconds, finishing in 4:56.98 and gaining a further four points. First years Annabel Dobash, Ella McCarthyAnd Amelia Wagner also set new personal benchmarks in the event.

Senior Allison Malatesta took the team’s first points of the day, smashing her previous personal best in the 3000m steep pursuit by over nine seconds with her time of 11:41.66, which was good for second and eight points for the Garnet Chargers.

Union rolled their success to the 400, with three finishing in the top 10. Senior Kasey McGerald led the way with her fourth-place finish, setting a personal best in 1:01.11 and gaining five points. Senior Glory Moncion Allen also picked up a point with her sixth-place finish in 1:02.55 while a junior Gabi Baker rounded out the top 10 in 1:02.71.

Baker later set a new personal best in the 200, crossing the line in 27.11 seconds, in 19th place, with freshmen Cat Doran right behind her she did the same and rounded out the top 20 in 27.20. First year Ava Partenza and sophomores Grace Ardito also added personal bests to the event.

Ardito also picked up a few points with her seventh-place finish in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.47 metres.

Senior Caroline Stanton added half a dozen points and a few personal bests to her name. On the track, she set a new benchmark with her time of 1:07.19 in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing fourth and scoring five points. She also added another point with her eighth-place finish in the long jump with her jump of 4.74 meters.

Union’s 4×400 group of Doran, Ardito, Moncion Allen and junior Marley Froe achieved a fourth-place finish in the event, with the unit taking five points with their time of 4:14.19.

The Garnet Chargers also competed in the mixed 4×400, fielding a pair of teams that took home the win and a third-place finish. Stanton and McGerald grouped with junior Nick DeBaise and senior Ben Trantanella for the win in 3:52.71, with Malatesta and senior Alayna Gibson along with seniors Ryan Hilliard and Mark D’Alessandro, they finished third in 3:58.33.

Union wraps up the regular season next Friday, when the Garnet Chargers will look to continue their success on RPI’s campus, where they finished second a week ago in the Under the Lights Invitational, in the Capital District Classic starting at 1 p.m. would start. :00 am
