Ole Miss baseball coach Mike Bianco gets his 1,000th win – and a bonus check

play

The road to 1,000 career wins began on a Friday in February in Baton Rouge, where first-year coach Mike Bianco and his McNeese State team earned their first win of the 1998 season over Southern, 5-1.

It ended Saturday, with Bianco coaching Ole Miss baseball to a 3-2 victory over Georgia in Athens, splitting a doubleheader and avoiding a damaging sweep.

The first 100 wins of Bianco’s career came in three seasons with McNeese. With Sunday’s victory over Georgia (29-10, 9-9 SEC), he reached 900 victories as he led the Rebels (21-18, 6-12). And that landmark comes with a bonus.

Bianco is entitled to $125,000 for reaching 900 wins. If he reaches 1,000, 1,100 or 1,200, he will earn an additional $250,000 for each milestone.

The bonus will be added to Bianco’s $1.625 million in base compensation, according to his contract, obtained by The Clarion Ledger through an open-records request.

After dropping a 7-2 decision in Saturday’s first Twin Bill game, Ole Miss fell behind 1-0 after an errant throw by catcher Trenton Lyons, who tried to slow a Bulldog stealing third.

Gunnar Dennis, starting for the first time since March 31, gave the Rebels 4.1 quality innings to keep them in it. Ethan Lege’s 12th home run of the season tied the game in the sixth, and the Rebels took the lead for the first time when Will Furniss’ single scored Jackson Ross later in the same inning. The Rebels scored a necessary insurance run on Andrew Fischer’s sacrifice fly in the seventh.

JT Quinn, returning from an injury that has kept him out since March 2, gave Ole Miss 1.2 innings of relief, allowing one run. Austin Simmons – who pitched in the first game of the twin bill – and Brayden Jones then closed out the game.

With 900 wins in an SEC program, Bianco ranks third behind Ron Polk, who had 1,218 wins while coaching Mississippi State and Georgia, and Tim Corbin of Vanderbilt.
