The Dallas Cowboys are eager to secure their star quarterback Dak Prescott on a long-term deal, but there doesn’t seem to be a sense of urgency on either side at the moment.

The Cowboys have previously expressed their commitment this offseason, being adamant about not letting their signal-caller walk away and viewing him as the future of the franchise. But when Prescott’s new contract is ultimately signed, it is expected to catapult him among the NFL’s top earners.

While the Cowboys are eager to get the deal done, they are also mindful of their salary cap issues. They need enough space to accommodate other key players such as standout pass rusher Micah Parsons and dynamic wideout CeeDee Lamb. Talks on a new contract have not yet begun, but Prescott revealed he had a conversation with owner Jerry Jones about a month ago.

Prescott commented, “I’m focused on here and now, where I am. That’s how I’ve always been. Every time y’all asked me, it’s always been about now, getting better tomorrow. And I’m in I’ve already got this situation I’ve been through it before, so it’s okay if I gamble on myself at that point or play this year out.”

If the Cowboys don’t sign Prescott to a new contract this season, they could be making a big gamble. Without an extension, Prescott could hit the open market next offseason, allowing other teams to snap him up without giving up any draft picks.

The prospect of a trade for Prescott loomed large ahead of the 2024 season due to his staggering $55 million impact this year. Extending his contract could dramatically reduce this figure and free up money to reward Parsons and Lamb. However, with no discussions underway, there are questions about the Cowboys’ commitment to retaining Prescott long-term.

And while he confirmed he is not concerned about the lack of talks on a new deal, he did hint at the possibility of him leaving the team after this season. His statement was: “I’m not going to say I’m afraid of being here or not. I’m not afraid of either situation, to be honest. I love this game and love to play and like to improve myself as player and my teammates around me.”

“Right now it’s with the Dallas Cowboys. It’s where I want to be and that’s where I am and that’s the focus. And after this season we’ll see where we are and if the future holds that. ..and then if not, we go from there.”
