Auburn University fell to LSU in the SEC tournament

Auburn University men’s tennis team was defeated by LSU in the quarter-finals of the SEC Championshipwith the final score being 4-3, Friday evening at the LSU Tennis Complex in Baton Rouge.

LSU, host university of this season’s championship, won two matches in three sets to earn the victory. Now the Tigers will find out the location and seeding of the opening round during an April 29 selection show streaming at 5:00 PM CT on NCAA.com. The loss ends Auburn’s run in the SEC Championship and moves its overall record to 17-10.

In doubles, Will Nolan and Tyler Stice jumped to a 3-1 lead and held off Ben Koch and Stefan Latinovic to win 6-3. Moments later, Billy Blaydes and Nicholas Heng, also with a 4-1 lead, achieved their third victory in a row together and took the doubles point.

In singles, a break gave Finn Murgett a 5-3 lead over Alessio Vasquez on the second court. Vasquez tied the match at five before Murgett won the next two games to take the first set. Alejandro Moreno and Billy Blaydes each posted 6-4 wins in the opening set for the Tigers.
Blaydes withdrew from Rudy Ceccon in his second set and won his match 6-4, 6-3 on court three.

Vasquez led Murgett 3-1 in the second set before the Auburn senior came back to tie the set at four and later win the match 7-5, 6-4.
LSU’s Julien Penzlin came back from losing the first set to Moreno, winning the next two sets and closing the deficit to 3-2.

After dropping his first set to Latinovic, Tyler Stice won his second set in a tiebreak to force a third set, while Nicholas Heng also forced a third set by winning a tiebreak against Chen Dong.

Dong’s 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4 victory over Heng secured a 4-3 victory for LSU and advanced the team to the semifinals.
