One death on Delaware State University campus, police investigation

DOVER, Del. – The early morning hours on Sunday were disrupted by the sound of gunfire on the campus of Delaware State University.

When Delaware State University police arrived on scene, they found one victim. “They arrived on scene and located an 18-year-old victim who was treated at the scene and then transported to the Bay Health Campus in Kent where she unfortunately passed away from her injuries,” said Master Corporal Ryan Schmid of the Dover Police Department. .

The victim is not a registered DSU student. Corporal Ryan Schmid says an incident like this, which happened in one of the residence halls, is unusual. However, his office is working hand in hand with university police to bring a suspect to justice. “They have cameras, access control points and things like that that we might not necessarily have access to, so we’re kind of just relying on that and having a partnership to work together to make sure this is resolved quickly,” said Master Corporal Ryan Schmid .

As students prepare to return to class this week, Master Corporal Schmid has a message for the DSU community: “Our number one priority is student safety, so we will continue to work with DSU as we have done recently. ensuring that their safety and security is number one and that they can have a safe environment in which to attend classes.”

The school says the suspect was last seen running away toward College Road. This investigation is ongoing, police are asking if you know anything or have any tips, you can call Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333.
