Unemployed Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 15 Review

As Rudeus’ (Yumi Uchiyama) life continues to come together for him, others face struggles. When those close to him feel the weight of danger and failure on them, Rudeus is happy to lend a hand Mushoku Tensei: Unemployed Reincarnation Season 2, Episode 15 “Far away.”

This week’s story begins with Rudeus receiving a surprise letter from Paul (Toshiyuki Morikawa, The witch and the beast). In the letter, Rudeus congratulates him on joining the magical school and informs him that his sisters are coming to stay with him. Paul’s party is entering dangerous territory, and bringing along children would be negligent at best. The letter states that the girls’ safe passage has been entrusted to an old friend of Rudeus.

How Unemployed Reincarnation Season 2, Episode 15 conveys the words of Paul through this letter is miraculously executed. The way it is written and the way Morikawa reads them convey the complexity of Paul’s relationship with his son. Due to their differences, they both struggle with each other, but the genuine love still shines through. Paul’s words reflect the difficult situation their relationship continually finds itself in, while still managing to express the honest affection and pride that Paul has for Rudeus.

After Rudeus reads Paul’s letter, we see him informing Sylphettie (Ai Kayano) of the impending arrival of his sisters. It is not surprising that Sylphettie is more than happy to receive Rudeus’ family. The kind elf has always shown a big heart, and extending it to her loved one’s family seems like an opportunity that would bring her true joy.

While the impending arrival of Rudeus’ family dominates Unemployed Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 15 opening, it’s not the core of the episode’s story. The primary focus of the story centers on Nanahoshi (Shion Wakayama, Lycoris knockback) as she continues to search for a way back to our world. After two years of research, she has finally put together a magic circle that she says will summon objects from our world. If so, it would be an important step toward building the bridge she so desperately seeks. However, when Rudeus imbues the circle with mana, it short-circuits and is torn apart.

Nanhoshi immediately becomes sullen and slumps at her desk. She doesn’t even acknowledge Rudeus when he tells her he’s leaving today. As Rudeus begins to descend the stairs in front of her door, he hears her screaming and smashing objects. He rushes back to see what’s going on.

How Unemployed Reincarnation Season 2, Episode 15 presents Nanhoshi’s mental state to the viewer is a masterful moment of visual subtlety. As the young woman goes on a rampage, tearing books and smashing pots, the way Studio Bind’s animators capture her facial expressions is layered and deep. Although her anger is evident, there is no warmth in her face or her body language. Rather, it is an anger born of desperation.

Her face belies the truth of her scream. She looks like she’s going to burst into tears instead of destroying a room. Nanahoshi lashes out because it’s easier to do so, to lose herself in destruction rather than face the grief rushing towards her.

But when Rudeus catches her and prevents her rampage from continuing, despair takes over her. The energy she wielded moments before dissipates, and soon she looks more like a corpse than a raging scientist. Fearing for his friend’s health, Rudeus carries her to the infirmary. Along the way, Rudeus encounters Zanoba (Satoshi Tsuruoka) who quickly offers his help in getting Nanahoshi to the infirmary.

From the infirmary, the sick young woman soon returns to Rudeus’ house for further rest. Sylphettie offers her all the help she can, but the despondent woman shows few signs of life. Since nothing seems to reach Nanahoshi directly, Rudeus decides to take a different approach to help his friend.

Rudeus gathers some of his closest friends to try to solve the magical riddle tormenting Nanahoshi. If they can figure out what missing element is causing her summoning circle to not work, it would certainly bring her out of her depression.

Unemployed Reincarnation Season 2, Episode 15

Thanks to some timely insight Zanabo gleaned from the living doll that ‘haunts’ Rudeus’ house, the party is able to come up with a working theory. When they present it to Nanahoshi, Studi Bind manages to make her elation as poignant as her anger earlier. As she realizes what the others have done, you feel life returning to her. Within moments she is back to scribbling and comes up with a hypothesis.

After a short montage showing the team’s exuberant work, Unemployed Reincarnation Season 2, Episode 15 sees the new, multi-layered Summoning Circle first trial application. The result: a plastic bottle appears in the mana field of the circle. With this success there is nothing to do but celebrate. Nanahoshi treats her friends to a party to thank them for all their work and support. The warmth of the moment is greatly enhanced by how well the emotional journey to get here is delivered.

If Unemployed Reincarnation Season 2, Episode 15 closes, Rudeus and Sylphettie return home to find Rudeus’ sisters waiting outside their house. The reunion becomes even happier when Rudeus discovers that the old friend who brought his sisters safely to him is none other than Ruijerd (Daisuke Namikawa, NieR: Automata Ver. 1.1a). This reunion serves to end the episode on a warm note.

Unemployed Reincarnation Season 2, Episode 15 comes together miraculously to deliver an impressive story of failure, frustration and support. Nanahoshi’s struggles are handled with great skill as the story sees her through trials and tribulations, thanks to the support of her friends.
